A lot has changed in the book since the first post. They decided to travel to the coast before heading south. They have passed a few people. The first they passed was a group of the bad guys and the old man had to shoot one of them to save the boy. They took all their belongings, though, so they had nothing to eat. They kept walking but they ran out of food. Then they got to an underground bunker that had tons of food and they stayed there for a couple days. They took showers and it had everything they could've wanted. They had to leave after a few days and they took as much as they could carry. On the road they came across a blind man who was by himself. The old man wanted to leave him, but the boy begged him to give the man a couple cans of food. They gave him the food and went on their way. The old man was already going to die, but he was going to live a few more days thanks to them. This book reminds me of the maze runner because in both books they are trying to survive. They are both dystopian societies and the world is almost destroyed. In both of them there is this city that is a stronghold that is one of the last remaining places that is safe. In the Maze Runner it is the Last City, but in The Road it is the South. In the book there is no government that we know of. Everyone is just trying to survive by themselves. In real life, we have a democracy which is a government where the people have a say. These are two very different ways of living and order. I will comment on Jazmin's and Nia's blogs

For this project, we were able to choose a dystopian book to read. I chose to read The Road by Cormac McCarthy. So far in the book there is a father and his son who are moving south. It has gotten too cold to stay north so they have to travel south. They have a shopping cart with all their things, and knapsacks on their back in case they have to run. The world is full of gray ash and they are in what used to be the United States. They have to pass over mountains, and the father thinks they could die soon. He has strange dreams frequently but he tries to forget them. I have read multiple dystopian novels before but this one is very different from other ones. There have been no other people so far except for the main two characters. In other books, there are many people but they are all suffering. In other dystopian books, there is usually one person who is different or can save the rest of humanity. In this book there is really no hope yet, except for making it south and maybe finding other people there. A similarity is that there are two people who rely on each other two survive. In this book it is the boy and his father who take care of each other and protect one another. This book takes place on earth but I am not sure what time period it is in. I am guessing in the future, since the US no longer exists. It is a good book so far, but kind of slow. I am guessing it picks up after this. I will comment on Nia's and Jazmin's blogs.
In the book Saba, Maviah, Steven, and Sara found where the mystic was staying and went to go find him. They had to cross the sea again and went on Elias' ship again. Since they wanted to get there as soon as possible, they crossed with the possibility of a small storm. No one expected it to be as bad as it was, especially not Elias who boasted that he was the best sailor in the whole sea and that the possibility was nothing. The storm was crazy, and consumed the boat with water. Everyone was prepared to die but all of a sudden the storm ended and they heard the voice of the mystic. In his surprise, Stephen jumped out of the boat to get to him ignoring the fact that he couldn't swim. They pulled him out and made it safely to shore. There they waited a couple days until the mystic arrived and met him there. He spoke to them as well as a huge group of people that had come from all around to see him. If I had to write a sequel, I would make it so Maviah completed her mission and convinced Herod of lowering her defenses. That way she could get back to Judah, who was suffering day after day in those dungeons. They would move back to her father's kingdom where he would regain his title as king. Maviah would be treated better and as an equal for everything she did and live happily ever after with Judah and have another child. The main character would stay the same, shameful person she considers herself to be. The conflict would be for her to complete her mission given to her by King Aretas. It will be hard but she will pull through in the end. Saba will die protecting her and die content with all he accomplished. Maviah will be sparked by his death and complete her mission so that no one else will suffer the same fate as him, especially not Judah. I would recommend this book to a friend depending on their interest because I feel like it is for a specific audience. Not everyone would enjoy this book, but a certain few will and I would recommend it to them.
In the book so far Maviah and Saba went to find Stephen who would lead them. Maviah waited for weeks while Saba went into the city to look for him, since it was too dangerous for Maviah to go in. Saba came back to her with Stephen and Sara and they set out to look for the mystic. If I were in the story I would be friends with all the characters, especially Judah. Judah seems like the kind of person you would want to be friends with. He always has a positive attitude, and is encouraging to everyone around him. I would not interact well with this world because it is in the desert and it would be really hot. I do not enjoy the heat and with the lack of water I would become very dehydrated. I would struggle to get along with Areta's wife, because she seems like a snake. She is mean to her stepdaughter and is a very conniving person. She tries to go behind Aretas' back to hurt people she doesn't like. It was her idea to throw Maviah into the prison for 2 months alone. Overall, I would not enjoy being in this book or living where and when this book takes place.
So far in my book Maviah made a deal with King Aretas to spare her father's life and return the kingdom back under his control. What she didn't see coming was that Aretas would hold Judah's life hostage in case she did not succeed in her mission. So she set out towards King Herod with Saba by her side with an impossible ahead of her. Maviah and Judah have a very good relationship and love each other. Judah refers to Maviah as his queen and will go to the ends of the earth with her and to protect her. He killed a man, Bruno, because he was torturing her and beat her with a whip. Maviah loves him too but does not find herself worthy of his love, she believes she is worthless. Maviah and Phasa have become close friends after spending all that time together in Herod's palace. Phasa considers Maviah her sister, and the two learned to trust each other and work together. They both despise Herod, and it was Maviah who saved Phasa's life by telling her of Herod's plan to kill her. Luckily they fled together to safety where Phasa vouched for Maviah's life. If not Aretas would have killed her. Saba and Maviah have a strange relationship since Saba is dutifully in the service of Rami, who commanded him to protect and accompany Maviah at all costs. They have just been acquaintances for most of the book, respectful to each other. Saba was the only one who visited Maviah and was allowed to when she was in prison alone for 3 months. He was the only one she had contact with and talked with during that time. Without him, she would've gone insane. Then they left together to go back to Herod, and that was the first time he referred to her as his queen.
The book I am reading is AD 30. So far in the book the land of the has been ravaged by Thamud with the permission of Aretas, king of the Nabateans. The king of the Kalb, Rami bin Malik, ordered his daughter to go to King Herod to make peace with Aretas. She did not succeed and was taken captive to King Aretas, where his daughter, Phasa, pled for Maviah's life. I think in the next part of the book Maviah will go back to Herod and succeed in helping the Nabateans. She will probably be physically hurt in doing so, but also emotionally hurt from being seperated from the person she loves. I think that Rami will be killed by Aretas but he will give the kingdom back to the Kalb after Maviah succeeds. I have really enjoyed the book so far. It is a historical fiction so I like that it combines truth with some fiction too. I am planning on reading the sequel after I finish this book.
