Throughout this project I learned a lot about my country, Spain, through research. I focused on the climate, culture, and political history of the country throughout the 19th century. The climate varies a lot in different parts of the country. It ranges from hot and sunny deserts, cold and snowy mountains, and cool and rainy coastal areas. Whatever climate you enjoy, there is something for you. Spain also has a very strong cultural background. The art and architecture in the country is some of the best in the world, especially during this time period. People like Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali influenced art styles for years to come, even until today. The political side of Spain in the 19th century was very shaky since they were trying to rebuild after being destroyed by Napoleon and the French Revolution. The change was for the better, though. They established a constitutional monarchy and gave people more power, which was a relatively new idea at the time.
The item we chose to recreate was a submarine since the first electric and military submarine was invented by Isaac Peral, a Spaniard. We chose to recreate it because it was one of the few items we both found interesting, and would challenge us in the construction process. We didn't want something that would be too easy or we didn't find interesting. I am happy with how it turned out at exhibition, comparing it with all the other items there too. We only had two people in our group and I felt like we had a better final product than some groups with 5 or 6 people in them.
The prototype process was really helpful because we got a clear idea of what we wanted our item to look like. Before our prototype we thought we had a clear idea but we didn't take everything into account. When we had to build a prototype we realized that we weren't as prepared for our final product as we had originally thought. Without our prototype I don't think our final product would be as good as it is.
Based on what I saw at exhibition, another country I would be interested in learning about is England. During the 19th century they were one of, if not the most powerful country in the world. That was my opposition country and I learned a lot about it, but I would like to learn more about them. They changed the world in many ways during this time period.
I am proud of my item, booth, and overall participation at exhibition. I feel like I did a good job explaining my country to visitors and all the reasons they should move there. I was also lead opposition so I spent a lot of time at England's booth and convincing visitors not to move to England and a lot of them actually didn't put a ticket in after they heard what I had to say. I also convinced them to go to the Spain booth and learn about reasons why they should move there. The one thing that could have been better was our booth. We had a pop up tent and the flag hanging from it. We also had fish and other decorations to make it look like it was underwater to go with our submarine theme. Since we only had two people, we didn't spend a lot of time designing the booth so we didn't have as good of a booth as I would've liked. Nonetheless, it was decent and I think it attracted visitors enough to where they came to learn more about my country.
I think exhibition went very well. The voting for countries was a good incentive for people to talk about their countries to visitors. There was a lot of knowledge shared with the public and I think the students learned a lot too. I really liked the idea of having an opposition country and one representative going to the opposite booth and sharing negative information about that country. It really shed new light on that country and opened up a new perspective that wouldn't have been shared without opposition. That way visitors got a whole picture of what the country was like during that time, not just the good side of it. The only downside was that it got very competitive at times since everyone was trying to get the most votes for their country. People were doing anything to win, such as giving away food. Then people weren't learning anything about the countries and only getting food from every booth. Other than that I think it went really well for both the students and the visitors.
